Portland

The Portland Stone series porcelain tiles are inspired by Portland Stone, quarried on the Isle of Portland in Dorset, England—a limestone with a geological history spanning 150 million years, formed through the slow accumulation and compaction of microscopic sediments. It bears a strong resemblance to Bath Stone yet possesses more subtle, distinctive textures, layering, and coloration.

Portland Stone is in fact a family of closely related limestone variants, each exhibiting slight unique qualities due to differences in age. Despite their variations, they share clear common traits: predominantly off-white to light grey tones with uniform overall color, interspersed with fine dark specks or "grains" that lend natural richness, visual depth, and tactile interest.

Used extensively in architecture since Roman times, it remains one of the most sought-after stones today, especially for spaces seeking a grand, dignified effect. From the mid-17th century to the 1930s, an astonishing volume of Portland Stone was incorporated into London's major buildings; even now, it retains its profound historical depth and clean, unpretentious beauty. It is iconic in landmarks such as St. Paul's Cathedral, Buckingham Palace, and the British Museum—symbolizing timeless elegance.
